Parking in front or down the street in the large free Jordan public parking lot. A scooter or electric wheelchair can take the doorframe easily and anyone being assisted can easily make the doorway in a manual chair if turned backwards. Manned by five local artists, the Jordan Art Gallery brings you unique pieces of sculpture, original prints, mosaics, jewelry, hand-turned wood, pottery, painting, fibre, glass and other innovative work for the discriminating palate searching for something different. Rodman Hall Arts Centre 109 St. Paul Crescent St. Catharines, ON (905)684-2925 Hours: Tuesday to Friday 11 a.m. to 4 pm.; Saturday and Sunday 1 to 4 pm. Located in the historic Merritt residence the front entrance is not accessible to people in wheelchairs but there are several designated parking spots right in front of the ramp that goes into what I call the Red Floor Gallery. You'll have to call ahead or from your cell phone or have someone with you go into the gallery and ask that the ramp door be opened for you. There is plenty of parking in front of the gallery in its own private lot. The spot you choose depends on your needs and the vehicle you drive. When I'm in my wheelchair being pushed, I use a simple marked spot and when I'm using my scooter I park further out so no one can park beside me and block access to my ramp. Eventually, when funding becomes available, Rodman Hall may have an entrance accessible to everyone, but right now it does take a bit of doing to get in. The parking is in place, the ramp is there but I'm thinking that because of security measures the ramp door cannot be left open all the time. If you're an art lover it's definitely worth the effort to get in. Rodman Hall features a series of shows by local artists and circulating shows from other galleries during the year in its galleries. All of the galleries are accessible and there is a permanent ramp down to the large gallery. There is also a gift shop and art rental where you can rent or buy works of art by local artists. I'll be checking out the washroom the next time I'm over. Arts Place Gallery 714 King St. Port Colborne, ON (905)834-9060 www.ruralroutes.com/artsplace Hours: Thursday through Sunday noon to 5 p.m. or by appointment There is plenty of off road parking in front of the gallery as it was Arts Autobody Shop in a former life. Arts Place Gallery is a fine arts co-op features the work of 16 extremely accomplished local artists working in portraiture, landscapes, abstract, sculpture and papier mache, jewelry and cards. Very large pieces down to tiny works are available. Windpoppy Studio behind Arts Place Gallery |
