FESTIVALS

Festivals by their very nature are a mixed bag of venues, some of which are accessible and some not. Take for instance our own Niagara Wine Festival held every year in St. Catharines. Most events are in Montebello Park which is, for the most part, accessible including the huge pavilion there.

There are many festivals throughout Niagara every year but in November and December the main one is:

The Winter Festival of Lights at Niagara Falls www.wfol.com
November to January every year
Lights on daily from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Featuring more than 50 light displays, 21 of them Disney-theme motion lights, the Winter Festival of Lights is an event anyone, whether physically disabled or elderly, young or old, can enjoy without even getting out of the car. Strung all along the Niagara Parkway, throughout Dufferin Gardens and in Queen Victoria Park these incredible displays are quite something to behold as you slowly drive by them in the dark.
Ron and I like to have a special wedding anniversary evening out near New Year's Eve that includes dinner out and then a drive down to the falls to see these light displays. Maybe it's the kid in me but I always look forward to playing tourist in our own backyard.
The Festival of Lights opens Nov. 23 with a concert at Queen Victoria Park and there is a special fireworks display over the falls that same night. If you've never seen a fireworks display over the falls, try to make it. It's glorious! You'll be looking up over the falls so people can't block your view and if they do, be a little assertive, shout "Coming through!" and get where you CAN see.
For more on this lovely festival including times and routes of parades, fireworks display times and concert venues please go to the www.discoverniagara.com Web site and click on the Festival of Lights logo on the left side. Everything is there.
