What a view!

Number of rooms in the hotel: 262 - number of accessible rooms: 3
The hotel was built in 1985/6 with 12 floors; floors 14-18 are part of a later addition. The numbers of the three accessible rooms are 311, 411 and 511 and all are non-smoking. The accessible rooms are alike and all have adjoining rooms with two double beds. Accessible Niagara audited Room 411. Room 409 adjoins 411.

PARKING: The hotel fronts onto Fallsview Boulevard with the rear (which also appears as a main entrance) reached from Stanley Avenue. The gated parking lot is located at the rear entrance and has two designated parking spaces to
the right of the hotel entrance marked with symbols on the ground and the wall. These spots would not be wide enough to accommodate side-loading vans so you would need to be creative to find a spot for this type of vehicle.
Alternately, the front of the hotel has a 15-minute unloading area located to the left of the entrance, and although it is not marked for parking spaces, accessible or otherwise, we are told this area can be used for accessible parking. The hotel has valet parking at the front entrance year round from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. at a cost of $15 plus applicable tax.

ENTRANCE & DOORS: The covered rear entrance is flat, easily accessed through double automatic doors and features carpet on tile. If visiting during the winter months you will notice a sign reminding guests that freezing mist from the falls, located approximately 500 yards from the hotel, causes icy conditions.
The front entrance features a revolving door, which is activated by close proximity to the door, however, to the left of this door there is a separate accessible entrance for guests in wheelchairs or scooters.
When entering from the rear, you will actually be on the mezzanine level, with the lobby one floor down.

LOBBY: If you are entering from the front of the hotel the registration desk is located directly straight ahead and to the right and features three lowered sections. The concierge desk and gift shop are staffed at peak seasons and according to need at other times of the year. The large lobby is attractively furnished and seeing as we visited during the Christmas season
the beautifully decorated tree only added to the atmosphere. Through the lobby to the left of the entrance is a Starbucks Coffee lobby bar. There is also an accessible pay phone in the lobby situated on a table. The phone is card operated.

The hotel keeps guest safety uppermost in mind by printing a special report on each shift (three times per day) noting occupation of the accessible rooms and any other rooms in the hotel where guests may need assistance in an emergency.

ELEVATORS, HOTEL HALLS & ROOM ENTRANCES: The elevators have a lighted display telling you what floor you have reached, e.g. L for lobby, M for mezzanine and the floor numbers. The back walls of the elevators are
mirrored so that guests driving into the elevator on a scooter can easily see what floor they are on as it is reflected in the mirror. The elevator keys, however, are not lowered. There is Braille on the elevator buttons, room numbers and public washrooms.
The hotel hallways are carpeted, 62" wide, nice and bright and very well lighted. The room we visited, 411, was just a few feet from the elevator, a real plus for someone using a walker or a manual wheelchair. There were no ice and vending machines on this floor with the nearest ones located one floor up.
The doorway to Room 411 is well lighted and entrance is with a plastic card.
The door opens out into the hallway, is 30" wide with a small ¼" lip. It has a lever handle and a lowered peephole. There is a light switch on the wall to the left, 49" high, which turns on a ceiling light in the hall.

Bed and door to adjoining room
Plenty of space between bed and armoire
TV opposite bed
Double pullout couch

BEDROOM: The entrance hallway into the room is 52" wide and 117" long and opens into the roomy 13' by 16' bedroom. The room features a duvet-covered king size bed set on a base, and a double pullout couch. The view is of the parking lot and the busy Stanley Avenue. To the right of the bed as you're facing it there is a round bedside table with a lamp, phone and clock radio.
To the left of the bed is an alcove with a desk, chair, phone, lamp and coffee fixings. All guest rooms are equipped with data port phone lines.
An armoire, on the wall opposite the bed, has a remote color TV with a play station. There is a luggage rack beside the armoire and another table between the armoire and the pullout couch. A floor lamp is located between the couch and the window wall. All lamps in the room are push button operated.
The ice bucket, glasses and TV remote were placed on top of the armoire, and we recommended they be placed on the desk or a table.
A large, full-length mirror is on the wall to the right of the armoire.
The closet is located next to the desk and has lovely mirrored doors, a lowered rack for hanging clothes and lots of coat hangers. It includes an iron and ironing board, but the iron would be too high for a seated person to reach.
The door to adjoining room 409 is located in the 100" of space between the bed and the window wall. There is also a plug, 14" from the floor, located near the adjoining room door and another one by the bedside table.
The thermostat for the room is below the window and is easily reached at 20" high. It is dial/push button operated. Even though the room was unoccupied when we visited, it was a nice touch that it was heated, unlike some hotel rooms that we have audited in winter.

Tub area
Easy lever and hand-held shower head
Various height grab bars
Bath seat in room under vanity
High mirror over sink in bathroom
Toilet area
High hair dryer

BATHROOM: The bathroom door is on your left as you enter into the hallway. At 29" wide the door is a little on the narrow side but it does open right out into the hall allowing extra room. It has a lever handle. The bathroom itself measures 60" by 80". There is a light switch with a timer on the wall to your right as you enter. The vanity is 33" high, 53" long and is open below allowing for legroom. It has one round sink 3 ½" from the edge of the vanity with lever handles on faucet. A major drawback to this bathroom is the large oval mirror above the vanity, which is too high for a seated person to use. However, we have made recommendations for change. The hair dryer with a stiff push button release is on the wall 22" from the top of the vanity and 12" in from the edge of the vanity and may be difficult to reach and operate.
The toilet is nice and low at 15 ½" with grab bars on the side and back above the toilet tank. There is a low, double toilet tissue holder. The space between the wall and the toilet is 8"; between the toilet and the bath 38"; and 51" from the front of the toilet to the vanity.
Plenty of towels were placed on a 54" high towel rack, but could be easily placed on the lower shelf.
The bathtub is 16 ½" high and measures 25 ½" wide inside. There is a 4" lip on the near side and 1" lip on the wall side. Plenty of grab bars surround the tub. The shower is operated with a thermostatic lever handle and has a hand-held showerhead. A definite plus in this bathroom is the ceiling light in the tub area as well as a bath seat located below the vanity.

Hidden doorway from lobby to pool
Pool (ramp is on top left)
Waterfalls at end of pool

POOL: The pool area is located on the lobby level but the change rooms are one floor down. It is suggested you shower and change in your room. While able-bodied guests use their key card to enter the pool area, this entry would not be feasible for guests in wheelchairs or on scooters as there are steps to manoeuvre. There is, however, a special accessible ramped entry
located beside Starbucks Coffee Shop in the lobby, but the door is camouflaged as part of the panelling so you would need to ask for assistance.
Patio tables with umbrellas are located poolside. There is also a separate whirlpool, which is not accessible. The pool features three waterfall fountains opening into the deep end. It has one set of steps and two ladders.

ACCESSIBLE WASHROOM: There is an accessible washroom on the mezzanine level near the rear entrance to the hotel. The hall to the washroom is 44" wide and the outer door opens inwards. The accessible stall is immediately to
your right with the door opening out into the outer door. It is difficult manoeuvring but possible for scooters. There is a lowered purse hook to help close the door, which has an easy sliding closure. The toilet is 16" high with grab bars and toilet paper within easy reach. The washroom has two accessible sinks with sensor operation. Paper towels are rather high but
reachable.

New casino from Fallsview Plaza Hotel

This is a lovely hotel located above the 500 falls and directly across from the new casino, which is scheduled to open in the spring 2004. The hotel will also feature a skywalk to the new casino and Hilton Hotel. You can check the hotel Web site for special packages especially during the off-season winter months. And the falls can be just as breathtakingly beautiful in winter with snow, frost and icicles decorating the landscape in a veritable winter wonderland.
