Gypsy Theatre was founded in 1989 and has become an integral part of Fort Erie’s cultural and tourist industry. In its present location for the past four years in the former Canadian Tire Store, it is located just 15 minutes from Niagara Falls and a mere stone’s throw from Buffalo, N.Y. It not only offers a summer series of professional stage productions but also workshops, special fundraising events such as flea markets and teen dances, and various activities and programs for children and adults in the community.

Being the former Canadian Tire Store, the paved parking lot is huge and parking a vehicle with a side ramp would not be a problem. The side view of the theatre from the road entrance to the parking lot is rather drab and could use a huge mural painted on the wall, but once you drive into the parking lot, the sign on the front of the theatre is really nice.

The entrance into the building is slightly ramped with a double manual door system. The small box office is on your right. Seating is reserved and staff will ask if there are any special needs.

The theatre seating is all tables and chairs and at the time of our visit was set up cabaret style with seating for 200. Special tables for wheelchair and scooter patrons were set up on the floor of the theatre. However, staff will ramp up to the first level at the request of wheelchair patrons. The theatre can accommodate up to 300 depending on the configuration of seating. We were impressed with the nice sharp sound system.

Accessible bathroom area with turnaround space

Washroom: There is a large 6’6” x 8’6” family accessible washroom to the left of the entrance. It has a lever handle on the door, grab bars around the toilet, and a sink with a lever handle faucet that is open below for legroom.

The theatre is licensed and has a bar in the outer room along with a table laden with boxes of chocolate truffles. This area has a nice selection of theatre props and costumes and a small collection of gifts and CDs.

Shows run Thursday-Saturday at 8 p.m. with some Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Tickets are $27.50 for adults; $23.50 for seniors (age 55 and over) and $23.50 for students with ID. Subscription and Membership Packages are available. For further information call the Box Office at the above telephone number and for a calendar of events and the theatre lineup you can also check the website at the above address.
