WINERIES

There are more than 65 wineries in Niagara with an impact to the ecomony of about $380 million. Some are small, some huge but they all have one thing in common...good wine. A growing industry, it is estimated that by 2021 some $1.2 billion a year will be generated by the grape and wine industry and 11,000 people will be employed throughout. Some wineries feature tours, restaurants, sampling bars, gift shops, wedding catering, and cooking schools and some are accessible to people in wheelchairs, scooters., etc. Some also feature festivals celebrating terrific products such as ice wine. For festival and special event listings please visit individual winery websites listed here after the name and address of each winery. They know their events better then we do and we'd like to focus on accessibility. Where we have "detail" it is provided with the listing.

The wine industry slows down for the winter months in Niagara but doesn't completely shut down. There is still plenty to see and do at Niagara's wineries even if there's snow on the ground. For instance: there's our famous, award winning ice wine to sample in front of a roaring fire and I think it goes better with a little frost on the windows and snow on the ground. There are also some fine winery restaurants open during winter months.

We've visited many accessible wineries in Niagara and we'll list them here with pictures. We look for accessible parking, building entrances, restaurants, patios, washrooms and anything else that is accessible we know you'd enjoy. We're taking pictures as we go and we'll put them up here for you to enjoy and they'll also give you an idea of the winery and what it's like. We've even found that some of the wineries we called during the winter now say they are not accessible. I guess it all depends who you get on the phone and what their idea of accessible is. That's why you have to have a person who is disabled or truly trained to recognize barriers do the job of auditing places.

We've found that you can see the entire wine making procedure if you visit several wineries. If one has inaccessible barrel rooms the next one will likely have their barrel rooms on the main floor. Another will have its bottling room open for vsits while another may not but might have it's huge harvesting machinery right out there for you to see. We'll mention what is and isn't accessible to you at various wineries so you can make sure you go home having seen the entire winemaking experience from preparing the land and digging fencepost holes to drinking the final results with a good meal.
